Will ‘Grease: Live’ Get Rained Out?

As the song says, it neve rains in Southern California — except today. Will that be bad news for “Grease: Live”?

Los Angeles was hit with rare showers this morning, part of what metereologists have said is an El Nino-related storm moving through the region. For drought-stricken California, any rain is welcome most of the time.

But tonight at 4 p.m. PST “Grease: Live” kicks off on Fox. The three-hour telecast will be the network’s first-ever live musical, and has been in the works for almost two years. (It will air at 7 p.m. in the Pacific time zone on tape-delay.) One way that the production is differentiating itself from recent NBC live musicals such as “Peter Pan” and “The Wiz” is through the use of four sets — some indoor, some outdoor.

Those outdoor sets could get a little wet if the rain picks back up today.

By 2 p.m., sunlight had broke through the clouds and rain in most parts of L.A. had subsided. According to the Weather Channel, the chance of rain in L.A. will decrease as the day goes on — with a 50-percent chance at 4 p.m. That falls to a 15-percent chance by 6 p.m., where it will stay until turning into a zero-percent chance of rain by midnight.

Regardless, “Grease: Live” director Thomas Kail told TheWrap that the show will go on, rain or shine.

“Something [unexpected] is going to happen that you can’t anticipate, but if you’ve done enough reps, then you also have the muscle memory to get back on course,” Kail said.

And the creative team is already working through a lot worse than a few raindrops to make sure that the show goes on as scheduled. Star Vanessa Hudgens tweeted Sunday morning that her father died Saturday night after a battle with cancer, and that she still planned to perform tonight.

“I am so sad to say that last night my daddy, Greg passed away from stage 4 cancer,” Hudgens wrote. “Thank you to everyone who kept him in your prayers. Tonight, I do the show in his honor.”

“Grease: Live” airs tonight at 7/6c on Fox.
